Coil Reading Glasses

Table of Contents

There is an urgent need for lighted glasses that enable conventionally sized text to be read in dim or dark environments, without strain. The invention provides two such pairs with high strength lights and light mounts featuring narrow beams angled slightly toward one another so as to overlap lighted areas which start spaced forwardly from and co-inside with starting reading distance ranges.

Lenses

Coil reading glasses utilizing corrective lenses adapted to enable conventionally sized text, such as ten or twelve point fonts, to be read when held at normal reading distances in poorly lit areas. The current invention utilizes high intensity lights with light beams synchronized with vision correction provided by corrective lenses in order to maximize reading light at these normal distances.

Light modules typically consist of a compact housing containing one LED power source with a disc-shaped light switch to activate it for production of light that is directed forwardly of eyeglasses. When mounted to frames of eyeglasses, these light modules also include an additional blinder extension 154 that blocks incident rays not intended for illumination of reading surfaces to minimize glare to wearer and distract others around them.

When not being used, lighted reading glasses can easily be detached from eyeglasses to reduce weight for maximum comfort while wearing. This feature can be especially helpful when wearing the glasses in environments that do not permit turning on lights such as public transport or reading in bed with someone sleeping nearby.

Luminescent reading glasses are intended to be securely attached to any pair of eyeglasses through a spring clip attached to their light module, providing easy release from their frame upon removing or adding new glasses. Constructed of resilient material like metal or sturdy plastic for long-term durability and designed specifically to fit around front and rear sides of lens frames to prevent movement; each spring clip can also be configured so that its front or rear faces fit over lens frame portions to prevent fore/aft shifting as it secures frames to glasses frames.

Lights

Light modules found within coil reading glasses offer an effective means of providing reading material in dimly-lit areas with sufficient illumination. Their light bulbs produce very little heat, making it comfortable to read for extended periods without becoming hot or irritating to eyes. Furthermore, these glasses produce an exceptionally bright beam of light at very little power consumption making them an excellent solution when used with small batteries.

Previous lighting devices for eyeglasses and similar wearable devices have proven insufficient in providing adequate illumination for a comfortable reading experience in low light environments. Large incandescent lights tend to be too obtrusive, leading users to become uncomfortable after prolonged wear time; smaller bulbs often produce an excessive amount of glare that makes reading an almost impossible feat for wearers.

Under one embodiment of the present invention, eyeglasses with lighting capabilities are provided with two light modules that are mounted to frames for supporting lenses of eyeglasses. Each light module contains high intensity LEDs configured to produce narrow light beam cones; these cones of light can then be canted inward toward one another in order to maximize brightness across a range of normal reading distances.

The brightness overlapping area in a light module should ideally be located either within or close to the starting point of normal reading distances. Furthermore, an oblique inward cant angle of narrow light beam cones 136 and 138 is intended to minimize how much light projects out from within its overlapped region onto adjacent parts of an eyeglasses frame outside this overlapping region.

Eyeglasses with illuminated LEDs also incorporate blinder extensions 154 to reduce any glare generated by incident light rays 170 from LEDs that reflect or refracted by lenses of eyeglasses and cause stray light rays 170 from emitting to reflect or refract through lenses of the glasses.

Durability

Durability is defined as the amount of wear and tear a product can withstand without needing repairs or replacement, as determined by various tests and standards. Durability also relies on adapting its product design in response to technological, design or technological innovations over its lifecycle.

Scientists at MIT have created a prototype using coils to transmit visual information directly from eyeball to a microchip on the eyeball, where it activates electrodes which directly stimulate optical nerves by bypassing damaged layers of retina. These coil reading glasses offer magnification while still permitting users to freely move their hands around.
