Macular degeneration is one of the main causes of central vision loss among adults aged 50 or above, affecting fine details like faces and objects more clearly as light-sensitive cells within the macula are gradually destroyed by progressive light exposure. Macular degeneration is a progressive condition which gradually breaks down its light-sensing cells within its macula, impairing our ability to see fine details like faces clearly.

Dr. Susan Bressler

Dr. Bressler is an internationally acclaimed ophthalmologist specializing in both medical and surgical management of diseases of the retina and vitreous. After graduating with honors from Smith College with a Summa Cum Laude award, she went on to earn her medical degree at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where she won the Paul Ehrlich Award for Clinical Investigation. Subsequently she completed an internship in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital as well as residency training in ophthalmology with Harvard Medical School’s Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary before returning home where she received her MD degree with honors from Johns Hopkins Hospital as well.

She then completed a medical and surgical retinal specialty fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, publishing widely in this field, such as conducting the first randomized controlled trial of intravitreal bevacizumab for treating age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.

She has also participated in collaborative clinical trials and served as principal investigator of both an image reading center and participating clinical research center for multiple clinical studies. She specializes in treating wet macular degeneration, which occurs when abnormal blood vessels leak fluid into the macula, leading to rapid loss of central vision.

Dr. Lowrey P. King

Lowrey P. King is a board-certified ophthalmologist and ophthalmic surgeon specializing in medical and surgical diseases of the retina, having published multiple journal articles as well as contributing chapters to medical textbooks. Dr. King belongs to both the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American Society of Retina Specialists; currently, he practices at Roper Hospital in Charleston South Carolina while affiliated with Bon Secours St Francis Hospital and Roper Mount Pleasant Hospitals.

Dr. Alan R. Dayan

Dr. Alan R. Dayan is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in retina and vitreous diseases. Dr. Shareen M. Greenbaum

Dr. Shareen M. Greenbaum is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in retina and vitreous diseases and surgery. She earned both her undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and medical degree from Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, graduating at the top of her class. Dr. Raphael Rosenbaum
