Emuxistat hydrochloride, an oral medication which blocks an enzyme’s action within the body, has also shown promise as a treatment option to restore visual function in some Stargardt disease patients.

Further studies of these and other interventions are necessary to ascertain if they can improve quality of life for patients suffering from Stargardt disease and related retinal diseases, and blinding retinal diseases in general. This is the purpose of the Natural History of Progression in Stargardt Disease (ProgStar) project sponsored by the Foundation Fighting Blindness; ProgStar will provide information that will assist researchers when designing randomized controlled trials designed to test treatments that might slow or halt vision loss associated with Stargardt disease.
